Tolstói murió viejo, denostando sus ficciones, buscando dar un ejemplo moral a los hombres. Ya había escrito un libro de pensamientos sabios para cada día y grabó extractos del mismo en distintos idiomas, para que los habitantes de otros lugares escucharan sus mensajes:
